Global Demand for British Farm Equipment Soars: 2024 Dispersal Sales Roundup
It is no secret that 2024 is set to be remembered as one of the most turbulent years in British agriculture since the Second World War, marked by challenges from severe wet weather in January to significant government policy shifts in October and November.
Despite the challenges farmers face, there is still a vitally important job to be done. Consequently, there has been no let-up in the trade for nice, genuine second-hand machinery.
The year started with our team traveling north to Cleadon, Sunderland, to undertake a dispersal on behalf of Mr Robin Shield. This sale included a fantastic consignment of arable equipment and attracted bidders from across the UK and beyond, including Lincolnshire, Kent, Somerset, North Scotland, Northern and Southern Ireland, and Poland.
This worldwide selling trend continued throughout the year, with the majority of combines sold in 2024 finding new homes overseas. With over 21,000 registered buyers on our online platform globally, it is fascinating to see where some of the machinery that passes through the sales goes.
February was particularly busy this year with three on-farm dispersals conducted on behalf of JP & WR Stirke, R & S Frankland and M R Cass, respectively. February also marked the busiest month for our online monthly machinery sales, which took place on-site at Murton with over 4,000 lots going under the hammer across three days.
May witnessed the next round of dispersal sales, with events on behalf of R M Whitaker and T A Broderick. Machinery was sold to buyers throughout the UK and Europe, with the majority of sales going to local farmers and contractors.
Late June played host to two notable dispersal sales. The first was undertaken on behalf of the late Bryan West of Shiptonthorpe, featuring a fantastic array of genuine, low-hour John Deere tractors. This was followed by a sale for Milestone Metalworks in Kirbymoorside, where all manner of metalworking tools went under the hammer.
The final dispersal sale of the year took place in November, conducted on behalf of H Harrison and Son of Northallerton, in conjunction with Robin Jessop. This sale featured three low-hour New Holland tractors that all made the journey across the Irish Sea to their new homes.
The demand for genuine, nice machinery has remained strong from January through to November, with no signs of slowing down. We are optimistic that this trend will continue into 2025.
We’re already preparing for a busy start to the next year, with sales already catalogued for February 2025. If you are considering a machinery dispersal sale and need some confidential advice, please feel free to contact me directly.
Finally, I would like to thank all the purchasers and vendors we’ve worked with throughout 2024. Your custom is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to working with you again in 2025. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.
