Our Roots

Founded in 1871 by Jacob Stephenson, we are a proud family firm now in its seventh generation.  

The business began when Jacob diversified from the family farm at Wighill near Tadcaster to start auctioneering at the local market. 

From these agricultural roots, StephensonsRural has grown over seven generations into a modern, multi-discipline professional partnership. 

Through our association with Stephensons Estate Agents and BoultonCooper, we’re connected to a well-established network of 10 offices, supporting residential and development markets across Yorkshire. 

Covering every aspect of rural consultancy, our skilled team offers expertise in practical farm management, complex environmental schemes, property valuations and sales of all sizes, and much more. With a hands-on approach and a deep understanding of rural challenges, we provide tailored support to meet each client’s unique needs. 

We take pride in our broad, loyal client base and the strong relationships we’ve built, thriving on repeat instructions and continued trust. Today, four direct descendants of Jacob Stephenson -James Stephenson, Edward Stephenson, Juliet Drewniak and Johnny Cordingley - continue his legacy within the firm.
