Farming in a Protected Landscapes Scheme
The Farming in a Protected Landscapes Scheme, currently delivered across 10 National Parks and 34 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) since 2021, has recently been extended until March 2025.
The scheme is a grant programme for supporting farmers, land managers and people who manage land in protected landscapes, like the Howardian Hills AONB, Nidderdale AONB and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park (NYM).
Of particular interest to farmers and land managers will be the ability to support nature-friendly, sustainable farm businesses. Land managers can include the private, public and charity sector.
Funding is available to assist with the ongoing management of sites as well as one-off capital schemes. Assistance will normally be in the range of 30-75% of approved costs but could be up to 100% in certain circumstances.
Supported projects so far have included:
- Hedgerow Reinstatement
- Concreting of Yards
- New orchards
- Planting herbal Leys
- Flood prevention
- Water course management and Fencing
- Creation of Wildflower Meadows
Both the AONB and NYM have dedicated local staff for the administration of these schemes. Our involvement in obtaining grants has been extremely positive, with a more user-friendly approach than some of the more complex national schemes currently available. The ability to look at proposed schemes on the ground leads to well-designed, bespoke schemes with better outcomes for all involved.
